“Another impressive wine from this vintage – these 2013 wines have positively surprised from barrel to bottle, evolving and building beyond initial expectations.” “Will give the 2010 Bin 28 a run for its money”… compliments of that pugnacious Barossa/McLaren Vale fruit-sourcing double-barrel!”

OVERVIEW Bin 28 offers a showcase of warm-climate Australian Shiraz – ripe, robust and generously flavoured. First made in 1959, Bin 28 is named after the famous Barossa Valley Kalimna Vineyard purchased by Penfolds in 1945 and from which the wine was originally sourced. Today, Bin 28 is a multi-region, multi-vineyard blend, with the Barossa Valley always well represented. GRAPE VARIETY 100% Shiraz VINEYARD REGION Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Padthaway, Langhorne Creek WINE ANALYSIS Alc/Vol: 14.5%, Acidity: 6.4 g/L, pH: 3.62 MATURATION 12 months in seasoned American oak hogsheads
VINTAGE CONDITIONS
After a dry South Australian winter reminiscent of 2006, vines were in water deficit at the beginning of spring and therefore became accustomed to dry conditions quite early. Early budburst was noticeable across many regions and windy conditions during flowering were, in some regions, responsible for variable fruit set and lower than average yields come vintage. Dry spring conditions explained canopy growth and low yields, becoming typical of the 2013 growing season. Warm days were dispersed throughout October, November and in early January, contributing to an early start to the 2013 harvest and a short, condensed vintage. Dry and warm conditions, coupled with lower than average yields resulted in Shiraz showing strong, structural tannins, wines of great intensity and encouraging flavour. COLOUR Deep dense red NOSE Classic, dark. A black aromatic theme – graphite, flint, char, black jelly bean… A sensitive yet apparent veil of oak – ever so shy, compliant. Scents from the baker – Christmas pudding, replete with brandy and Cointreau-soaked currants; And from the chef – roasted meats, jus, pan-scrapings. PALATE Full and expansive. An immersion of flavour saturation and a textural continuum across the palate. Mouth-coating sweet tannins and balanced acidity…never confronted by any threat of new oak. Black olive and chocolate notes resonate with an abundance of fruits – plum, prune, blackberries, wild blueberries… Persistent length and flavour, finishing firm and assertive.

“A contemporary fresh/bright expression of Australian Cabernet Shiraz, approachable earlier.” “This is not a baby 389, nor does it pretend to be … it’s yet another duet from two proven varieties that meld and synergise effortlessly.”

PETER GAGO PENFOLDS CHIEF WINEMAKER

Bin 8 has been crafted in the traditional Penfolds style. Ripe, balanced fruit flavours are supported by softly integrated oak resulting in a silky, smooth red wine. It was introduced in response to an interest in Cabernet Shiraz blends – a classic Australian wine style that caught the attention of the international wine media. Although Penfolds Bin numbers were originally named after the original binning location after bottling, Bin 8 was given its number because it uses older oak previously used for Bin 128, Bin 28 and Bin 389 – with ‘8’ obviously providing the common thread. COLOUR Bright red. NOSE Youthful. Fruit-pastille, blue fruits, wine gum aromatics. Stylistically genteel … an altogether different style. Fruit-derived scents of violet, lavender and talc apparent. Oak present, yet well-hidden.  PALATE Medium-bodied. Balanced, youthful, bright. Cranberry, boysenberry and mulberry fruits laced with star anise and cardamom. Defined, granular and cohesive tannins; integrated and supportive oak.

VINEYARD REGIONS McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Upper Adelaide. VINTAGE CONDITIONS With above-average winter rainfalls and cool conditions that followed during the spring period, South Australian regions generally experienced a later budburst and disease pressures impacted to varied degrees across the state. Meticulous vineyard management was critical. Walking the vineyards in spring, soil moisture levels resulted in healthy shoot growth and early canopy development. Healthy vegetative growth continued during the cooler spring months and delayed veraison and berry development in the new year. A few warm days at the end of January guaranteed the completion of veraison and commencement of the ripening season. Multiple rain events, often isolated, meant that attention to sub-regional detail was required with selective harvesting of pristine fruit. Low baumes at harvest coincided with flavour development. With a focus on warmer regions, McLaren Vale and Barossa Valley fruit sourcing prevailed.

BIN 128 COONAWARRA SHIRAZ 2013
“An impressive aromatic and tasting disposition reflective of a confident Coonawarra Bin 128, in a year not compromised by climatic extremes.” “The half-century-old tussle continues. Which Shiraz will be marginally preferred this year… the 2013 Bin 128 or the 2013 Bin 28?!”

OVERVIEW With each vintage release the cool-climate Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz provides an interesting counterpoint to the more opulent and richly concentrated warm-climate Kalimna® Bin 28 Shiraz. Bin 128 comprises fruit sourced from the unique cigar-shaped terra rossa soils of Coonawarra, a region that exemplifies the perfume, transparency and seductive nature of cool-climate red table wines. Coonawarra has remained the primary source of Shiraz fruit for Bin 128 since the inaugural release of the 1962 vintage. In order to further enhance the regional qualities of Bin 128, the wine is matured in a mixture of new and seasoned French oak hogsheads for 12 months, a method that was refined during the 1980’s when the transition was made from American to French oak. GRAPE VARIETY Shiraz VINEYARD REGION Coonawarra WINE ANALYSIS Alc/Vol: 14.5%, Acidity: 6.3 g/L, pH: 3.63 MATURATION 12 months in French oak hogsheads (26% new, 41% 1-y.o., 33% 2-y.o.)
VINTAGE CONDITIONS
2013 delivered an impressive Coonawarra vintage. Vines were in good health entering the growing season thanks to sufficient soil moisture profiles and warm, consistent spring weather. Budburst was early and fruit set was even and successful resulting in a high number of berries per bunch. Significant bunch thinning was required at this stage to reduce yields and ensure the crop maintained intensity and concentration of flavour. Warm weather continued throughout December and January with a number of hot days proving to be the catalyst for what was a rapid veraison and an early start to vintage. A cool to mild Autumn ensued, providing late ripening varietals such as Shiraz and Cabernet the perfect conditions to achieve optimal sugar/acid balance and phenolic ripeness. Yields for the 2013 vintage are in line with the average for Coonawarra and the overall fruit quality is excellent, comparable to the much lauded 2010 and 2012 vintages. COLOUR Deep dark crimson NOSE Intriguing Bin 128 and Coonawarra markers ascend almost immediately; florals, black pepper, cola… diplomatically sanctioned by a custodian Penfolds imprint. Cedary, spicy oak and the faintest suggestion of a BBQ char? Or, maybe not?! Lively red-curranted fruits garnished with a sprinkle of white chocolate dust. PALATE Medium to full-bodied. Fine, grainy (tight) tannins mesh with black and red cherry fruits and savoury aniseed flourishes. Supportive French oak affords length, definition and cohesion.

Penfolds 2009 Bin 138 actually had me feeling kinda guilty, like I was doing my bit to assist the slow destruction of Australia's wine business. Andrew Caillard MW gave the wine 96pts in an eye-catching newspaper ad, but I was more taken by the honest opinion of another Andrew.

From what's shaping up to be a good year for South Australian grenache, Penfolds has produced an archetypal Barossa GSM of immense drinkability. It's floral, joyously ripened and fruity, with an air of cinnamon stick providing a lightly spiced lift to deep set, plummy scents of blueberries, raspberries, chocolate and even tar, without a shred of over-ripeness evident. Brightness and harmony exude throughout the palate, as everything just seems to fall into place seamlessly, like melting chocolate in your mouth. Expect juicy plum, choc-raisin and raspberry flavours; expressed with ideal ripeness, and pushed along a medium-medium/full body (which is far from heavy) by gentle spices and a charmingly resistant extract of gritty tannin, causing the wine to move in a more rustic manner down the back palate, before leaving the mouth with a faint taste of sweet and sour meaty flavour. Its judgement in the vineyard and winery seems..... beyond perfection for what I paid.
